SCA

“We at SCA believe that this model and methodology is a powerful tool to have an overview of our impact on the climate and understand how our business and products contributes to mitigate climate change.”

SCA was the first forest company to provide annual reporting of its total climate impact in their 2018 Annual report. The climate benefit is calculated according to the CLEAR-model and in 2023 SCA contributed with a benefit of 12.8 million tons of CO₂ equivalents. That corresponds to more than a quarter of Sweden's territorial fossil emissions.

The calculations within the different components of CLEAR can be seen in the table below. Note that a negative number indicate a reduction of greenhouse gases, which is a positive effect for the climate.

Norra Skog

"In our sustainability work, we strive to ensure the forest's ecosystem services in the long term and at the same time reduce the environmental impact from our own production processes.

Forestry benefits the climate in many ways. Each year, our members' forests sequester nearly four million tons of carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Climate benefits are also gained from our forest products displacing more climate-burdening products such as steel, cement, plastic and fossil energy. The benefits of our products thus extend far beyond our business.

A careful balance is required to optimize the overall benefit. Our ambition is to, in dialogue with relevant stakeholders, focus on the areas where we can make the biggest positive difference. The results from the calculations according to the CLEAR model give us a more nuanced picture of the whole and also a better basis for stakeholder dialogue."
